The Challenge

Building water into a Hill Country slope so it reads as terrain, not decoration — the kind of thing that only works if the stone looks placed by weather instead of by machine. The first pond went in during 2020. We were asked back three more times, and the last phase wrapped in 2025.

What We Built

• Stream bed and pond excavated, shaped, and set on doubled underlayment and doubled liner

• Boulder-set course using native stone pulled from the property itself

• Pump systems built and sized specifically for this feature, to move and circulate the water the way the streambed needed to run

• Custom bridge — welded steel frame on poured footers, decked in wood

• Pavilion foundations, footings, and concrete, posts encased in stone

• Mortared rock skirt matched to the stone on the house

• Dry-set stone edging and a flagstone seating area

• Native and adapted planting across a dozen species

• Landscape lighting on a programmable timer, aimed after dark alongside the client

Result

Four phases. Four and a half years. One property. The water still runs.
